I'll Share a Short Cut

Just call me wFerdinand Magellan. You’ll note please the map of the east end of St Croix. It is narrow with a high ridge running down the spine. The island here is about ½ mile wide.

Highway 82 is the road that takes you from the north shore to the south shore and covers an additional 4 miles. This is precious time when on is trying to maximize a vacation.

Several years ago I discovered an unpaved short cut (in red) that is well maintained and the views are spectacular. Last trip there in February I started using this short cut on a regular basis.

There are two other north south short cuts on the island, one mid island and the other just before the mountainous area on the west end.

They make for nice detours if you are trying to avoid traffic and don’t mind getting off the beaten trail.

I think it is often good to get off the beaten trail - see what the others are missing!

Traffic? You've got to be kidding.

Oh no...mid island traffic is horrible at certain periods of the day or week. The road design creates bottle necks. Drivers are courteous and beep their horn to let you out but it is a slow process.

The worst places I have seen are Christiansted Down Town and Sunny Isle Shopping Center area.

Expect a 45 minute ride to the airport to cover 12 miles.

I'm okay with that.

I always ask customs, "Are you sure I am okay to come into The United States? ....hoping that they may detain me and I can stay.
