Slain

I haven’t seen someone slain in the newspapers since November 1963 when the Durham Morning Herald had the headline, “President Is Slain”.  I remember that headline to this day.

Slain is a simple word that carries a lot of violence.

You are right - I hadn't really thought about it but it is much more violent that plain old "killed", or even "murdered"!

I thought slain was a combination of sleet and rain.
