Return of Rasta Clause

Rasta Clause is an old jolly fellow,
who smokes a big fatty,
to get kind of mellow.

His hair is gray, with long dreads, but clean,
his clothes are old too,
and are always red, yellow, and green.

When he smiles his teeth are all broken and brown,
Walk in town early enough,
And you’ see him lying face down.

to be continued......

Three Things

I love eating oranges this time of year. Oranges are free food on weight watchers. I eat about four a day.

By golly I have eaten my weight in bananas since I started this weight reduction and I have found that I prefer Chiquita over Dole. The skins are thick as rhino hide on the Doles leaving less fruit. They are more difficult to peel too. I buy a bunch a day now.

And finally I love tracking a package. UPS is the best but US Postal is getting better. I sent a package out today for a Wednesday delivery. I’ll check on it tomorrow once it shows up online.

It is better when the package is coming to me but sending one is phfun too.

Poor Bastard

I don’t need an oven; I already have a nice microwave.

I don’t need a jet ski; I already have a nice boat.

He just doesn't get it. Someone save this poor grill.

And now for something completely different.

Miami Vice, episode 5, Filmed on St Croix. I recognize every scene. Most of it is in Christiansted. Some of the first part is in Frederiksted. It was call St Andrews on the script.

And look! The mother ship is talking. I got the GPS working for the space craft!

Weigh In

I am down 20 pounds from this unflattering picture in September. Officially down 14 pounds from the beginning of weight watchers.

I have lost 5 pounds in my head alone. Fat pants are loose. I feel good.

10 more pounds to go to reach my goal. I should hit this by St Croix time.

Space Hardware

More space hardware arrived yesterday. It was a functioning Motorola i425 phone with GPS.

I spent part of Saturday morning programming the new phone. This phone is mighty old by cell phone standards so there is a bit of a backwards learning curve for me.

To make matters more difficult I am not in the coverage area for Boost Mobile. In fact coverage is going to be an issue for where I launch this thing.

If I launch west today, say in Clover, SC, the darn thing floats 47 miles east.

Here is the data I got back from a proposed launch this morning.

Initial Position
35.13 degrees north, 81.19 degrees west, 211 meters.

Just East of Clover, SC

60,000 feet - Ascent
35.19 degrees north, 80.70 degrees west, 18288 meters.
24.6 nautical miles, 86 degrees magnetic from the initial position.
The magnetic declination is -6 degrees.

Burst

Burst Point

35.08 degrees north, 80.56 degrees west, 30000 meters.
31.2 nautical miles, 100 degrees magnetic from the initial position.
The magnetic declination is -6 degrees.

Impact

Impact

35.25 degrees north, 80.25 degrees west, 211 meters.
46.7 nautical miles, 87 degrees magnetic from the initial position.
The magnetic declination is -6 degrees.

When I compare this to the coverage map, I get a bit queasy. I may have to calculate a Lincolnton, NC launch.

There is still lots of stuff to do and plenty of time.

Cars

I test drove a new car yesterday. It was a 2012 Ford Flex. It was like floating in a cloud compared to my current aging fleet of cars.

I hate buying a new car but I must. Gigi needs a solid car with automatic transmission.

First appearance the Flex is boxy and unattractive but it grows on you. It has the comfort of a car with the room and practicality of an SUV. It is huge inside but parks and handles like a car. It is so quiet.

And so begins the long agonizing process I must endure buying a car. Other folks buy cars quite casually and often. Not me.

I did get my pickup detailed yesterday. That thing is slick and shiny as a wet eyeball. I dropped off my jeep for the same treatment. My two red vehicles will be gleaming.

Finally today I will transport two convicted egg eaters to a new home. I am not at the point where I can eat pet chickens so they will go to a friend’s house to live out their days and think about their transgressions and the good life they threw away.  Punishment enough.

A Good Thing....

If you are a regular reader, you know I like to share good ideas and recipes when I find them. Today’s recipe is Christmas spiced Rum.

Buy a liter or 5th of Cruzan Dark Rum. It is not at all expensive, usually about $16 here on the mainland. It costs about $7 at Kmart on St Croix.

Then find one vanilla bean (not so easy to find), 3 to 4 cinnamon sticks, and 5 or 6 whole cloves.

Pour out enough rum to make room for the spices. I suggest a rum and coke at this point.

Now put in the spices and seal the bottle until Christmas. Mix the spiced rum with eggnog. It will blow you away with flavor.

Travel Day

Yesterday I got my travel on. I just love this Google Latitude that lets me see where I was, and when, and how far.

The RV looked fine. I winterized it but ran into a hitch with the pump and was unable to pump antifreeze throughout the system. At the time I thought the pump was bad but about ¾ the way home I realized that I did not turn the bypass valve. So’ I’ll nee to blast down again before a hard freeze.

I had lunch with friends on the water front. I was left eating chicken breast and salad while they ate tuna rare with crab cakes and fried flounder.

Afterwards I headed to pick up a bushel and a peck of fresh oysters. One bushel was for a friend and the peck is for me. An oyster is 1 point on weight watchers, and that means I can eat 31 in a day.

So I’m driving back around 3 PM and I get a call from my friends that I just ate with and she tells me Edwin is in the ER with strange feelings, numbness and his right hand was seizing.

In about an hour he finds out that he has neurotoxins in his system from the tuna. The doctor explains that most large game fish if not handled properly (refrigerated) can develop these toxins. Fortunately he was okay in about an hour.

A Question

In the South, we serve our dogs on Dixie plates. Bun toasted on the grill or not, with your choice of ingredients. You win one of these dogs if you can predict the outcome of the following situation:

Mic was here and he said you rock.

Not like “You rock dude!” but, “Hey wReg, you need to double wax your toilet because it is rocking”.

Think I, the gadget nerd, can do it?  Fix the toilet? Not gag or have a leaking toilet?

Saturday

Yesterday I had a visitor from another blog. Mic shows up from Tennessee around 10 AM, and we commenced to farting around doing country man stuff.

We went to the feed store and the hay barn. Got vittles and adult beverages at the grocery store.

Then we figured out how to drop that big tree.

Followed up by a big fire and oyster roast while we spun a chicken and Skyped with Phfrankie.

Good times.

I Have Synesthesia

Synesthesia is a neurologically based condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway.

In one common form of synesthesia, known as grapheme → color synesthesia or color-graphemic synesthesia, letters or numbers are perceived as inherently colored, while in ordinal linguistic personification, numbers, days of the week and months of the year evoke personalities.

My oldset sister has this condition as does a great neice.

I personally enjoy the addition of colors to days of the week, months, and certain conditions. It is normal to me.

July 14, 2006 I wrote this:

COLORS OF THE WEEK

I associate colors with the days of the week. I have done this all my life.

Back in college I wrote a paper on this subject and received a B-. I think the professor thought I was a nut.

Ever since then, I have kept this color association a secret. I figured that this concept, if made public, would be the final straw for some adult to commit me to a mental institution.

Some days colors are constant like Wednesday. Wednesday has been a yellow day all my life.

Thursday has always been uniquely amber. No other day has ever been amber.

In fact, most days are confined to several basic colors blue, green, yellow, and red with an occasional but rare mix if the day is changing colors.

There are no rules to the colors; it’s just what I mentally see. The colors rarely change but can change over time.

Now the weird part of the story just in case you didn’t think this was creepy enough.

Two years ago at a crowded family Christmas dinner, my oldest sister Etta somehow starts talking about how she associates colors with the days of the week.

I jumped in and said I too have colors for each day of the week. My nephew Tom thought this was absurd and accused of rehearsing this routine for after dinner family entertainment.

As soon as Etta and I realized we had the same associations we started blurting out the colors. All days matched exactly with Wednesday and Thursday being exactly the same constant and the exact same color.

I wonder how our brains got wired this way?

This association skipped Judy the middle child.

Color Key

Monday – Turquoise (currently, I think this day is changing colors)
Tuesday – Green (Currently and most often but sometimes yellow)
Wednesday – Always Yellow
Thursday – Always Amber (more of the color of tea)
Friday – Yellow (currently)
Saturday – Blue (currently)
Sunday – Yellow (currently)

Stuff wReggie Likes

I don’t run with the bulls, and I don’t do black Friday. If I had to choose, I’m thinking running with the bulls would be far more thrilling.

Next Tuesday is a “me” day. I am taking a long road trip to Southport to winterize the RV. I love a long road trip alone. It will be about 8 plus hours’ road time.

I had planned to use the RV the past couple of months, but we had no idea of how intense Gigi’s recovery would be. So far she hasn’t traveled very long distances in the truck.

I have reserved a bushel of Lockwood Folly cluster oysters for a friend, and a peck of Whitesville inlet individual oysters for my personal consumption. I’ve been eating the Lockwood oysters but decided to give this other local NC variety a try. I’ll pick them up at nearby Oak Island on Tuesday.

I can imagine I’ll settle in front of my outdoor fireplace Wednesday evening with pairing drink, and have a few oysters on the half shell. I might steam them “Phfrankie Style” by placing them on the hearth.

Goals

Well it’s been six weeks now on Weight Watchers and 12 pounds are gone. If I stay on this course, I’ll be at my goal by New Years.

I feel good, and I am into a stride with this eating routine. There was body rejection at first. I had hunger spells but now I have adjusted. I crave a few things forbidden but manage the temptation.

Sweets are not a temptation for me. I would mind at all something fried, with a big old pile of mashed potatoes and a biscuit. But I easily keep that urge at bay.

I have discovered I actually like fruit.

My wardrobe is opening up again. I was at the point where I had to suck up to get on my fat pants. Now they are falling off. I feel lighter and more mobile. I can’t wait to loose the next 12 and I am there.

Space Update

Space hardware is arriving. The parachute is something else….very nice.

The GPS Motorola i425 Boost Mobile Phone is a piece of crap. The seller has agreed to replace it free of charge with a tested used one that he says will work.

Once I get the GPS and camera configured, then I’ll order the backup power units to ensure everything will work in the cold temperatures of space. I’ll pack all the electronic equipment in hand warmers to keep the items functioning in 70 below zero temperatures.

I activated a Boost mobile account for tracking the GPS. I figure the data usage will cost as much as the phone at 20 cents a minute.

The target launch date is by the first Sunday in March.

Frugal Wreggie

I moved into the soup world tonight and I feel so frugal.

First of all I have been doing all the cooking since Gigi went in the hospital 7 weeks ago. She loves good food like I do, but she doesn’t feel good enough to go out to eat often. Fortunately I love to cook and she likes my cooking.

Normally when I spin a chicken on the Weber, I take the meat for the meal, and leave the rest in the refrigerator to eventually go bad.  What a waste!

We had a wonderful rotisserie chicken and rice tonight. After supper I stripped the carcass of residual meat. Then I cut some carrots, celery, onions and added the meat and chicken broth form a carton.

I took the leftover chicken carcass and slow cooked it to render some natural broth.

So I have two pots going and the kitchen smells like grandmas house.

After a couple of hours, I strained and poured the broth in the lager pot and added some green peas. Lord it all smells good and I haven’t even seasoned it.

I’m simmering it a few more hours and let it stand in the 30’s outside overnight. Tomorrow I’ll add seasoning and either noodles or rice and it will be homemade chicken soup.

I Woke up from a Deep Sleep and This is What I Saw

My mortgage guy called me and said he could roll my loan and lock in 3.5% fixed on a 15 year loan. This would be the third substantial rate reduction in 2 years. My first home loan back in 1982 was 14 ½%, bought down from 17%, back in the Jimi Cawduh days.

Last Tuesday I went to a product presentation at Ruth Chris Steak house. I got butter splatter all over my pants from the steaks being served over my plate of Weight Watchers chicken.

Anyway, the crux of the product was a whole life insurance policy that would return your principal, and paid the client nothing. Zero. It had a death benefit and an assisted living benefit, but I couldn't get over the 0% rate of return. The presenter seemed so proud that they we able to pay nothing.  I asked publically if that rate was locked in a guaranteed.
He didn’t think it was as funny as I did.

These two examples above prove money now is virtually worthless.

In sports, a coach is accused of raping boys while the others look the other way. Then students riot when the school cleans house after the gruesome story is revealed. I guess wining a damn football game and setting records is more important than protecting a child?

These are strange times.

Why do I scuba, raise chickens, have a Jeep, cook, golf, grill, travel, dream, laugh, RV, tailgate, and enjoy life under these conditions?

Mental Vacation keeps me sane baby.

Scientist and Space Stuff

The GPS phone arrived and it appears to be a piece of shit. I will try and salvage this scam from Amazon. No charger and no sim card with a worn out used phone.

Camera Issues

Man, I am getting too old for Daylight Saving Time, too lazy to change clocks, so I am confused most of the day.

I should have all components together by the weekend to start tinkering with the space capsule.

A 60 in parachute is on the way. It was a surplus military mortar parachute.  I also have a 36 in chute on the way for testing.

A small 7 foot balloon for testing is in too.

The GPS should be delivered at home today.

The biggest obstacle I see is getting cameras to function reliably. I gave an older Canon SX110IS that takes might fine high res pictures and I no longer use it.

I also have a Cool Pix Nikon that could be used.

Third I have a buddy who has a camera store with a suggestion.

Whatever works, its going to have to function up to 3 hours in 70 below zero temperatures and winds up to 150 MPH.  That is going to take some hefty power and heat to maintain the camera(s).

I am not sure if we will run non stop video or still shots every 5 seconds. I lean toward the stills.

Any ideas and suggestions would be welcome.

Observation

I like people watching at most any level. I am enjoying now watching liberals attack whomever they fear most.

Once upon a time they ridiculed Palin, then Perry, no wait, Cain.

They like Romney because he is one of their own.

All the while liberals sit in stone silence and accept the evident deficiencies of their own leaders.

They are only vocal on the blame game. It is the rich that made me poor, they are greedy, make me a job, it is Bushes fault, it is the republicans, I don’t want to pay back my Harvard loan, booo friggin hooo.

Steve Jobs was an observer of people and I think he said it best about the current administration. Obama's focus on excuses "infuriated" him.

Have we completely extinguished our can do attitude? Are we all just sheep?

It is fun to watch but it makes me sad to see how it unfolds. Good minds are being wasted on excuses.

If I Launched Now

This is the projected path.

You can see there is a rapid accent to 35,000 feet, the a slow climb from 60,000 feet to 100,000 feet and burst. Then she drops like a rock.

The landing spot is two counties over. It is all based on current weather information and must be passed on to the FAA prior to launch.

I Am Going To Space

Yes, I am serious.

If you know me, you know I like challenge, and I like to do outrageous things that no one else does. Sending a homemade space capsule to the edge of space fits the bill.

A lot of people have done this and in fact it is considered a hobby. What I like is the design challenge and the feeling of accomplishment if it all goes down.

The considerations are as follows:

Weather Balloon
Capsule design
Camera (s)
GPS
Insulation
Heat
Aerodynamics
Parachute
Strobe Recovery Light
On board power
Testing
Recovery

Here are some design plans and a video from another space pioneer.

FAQ

Why? – Because I have never been to space and never will. But if I can send something to space, and bring it back, then I will have fulfilled a childhood dream of something of mine going to space.

Can I join your efforts? – Yes. We are looking for talented men and women. We need ideas.

If I join, can I wear a lycra jump suit for the launch. – Yes…absolutely.

How much will this cost? – I figure I can get to space and back with a camera or two and a gps for less than $250. We already have funding.

Could I include something of mine like toenail clippings, or hair, to say I have been to space? – Hmmmm…maybe, but the payload is limited to 4 pounds. I will have to see how the weight works out.

Will there be an official patch and souvenirs? – Hmmm, no.

That Time Of Year

Saturday was spent blowing leaves. From the barn, to the coop, the guest house, the house, the front yard, the back yard, the lower yard, along the street and the driveway has been cleared of leaves.

They’ll be back and in a month I’ll do it all over again.

I love This App

It was a fun day on the North Shore.

I've Always Wanted to do This Effect

I've always wanted to be able to do this color in effect on a black and white. Now I can.

Good Things

Oregano is good in a lot of stuff. Try and use it more often. I love it so much I could make some oregano cologne just to smell it more often.

Ground black pepper is way under rated. Use it generously in cooking.

I bought a meat grinder for my 30 year old kitchen Aid mixer. I can’t wait to grind my own hamburger meat, cheese and whatever.

Onions are good with anything except chocolate cake. Use more onions.

Use more garlic, and for goodness sake, buy a garlic press and use fresh garlic.

I used all four ingredients tonight, and I will be able to smell the garlic and onions tomorrow on my hands. That is not a bad thing.

Be Still My Soul

A milestone was reached today... 100 days until we return to paradise.  It doesn’t seem that long since we was marking 200 days.

I say we because Gigi plans on being there this time. She hasn’t made the last three trips because of her back.

Never again do I want to be more than 6 months from my next trip to St Croix.  Sorry, I am spoiled. The 200 plus drought has been stressful.

I can deal with 100 days. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Kwanza, Festivas, MLK day, American Idol, and the Super bowl and I am home free.

I can’t wait to do some first class diving, see first class sunsets, and feel warm salt water.

I Knew It

I knew it would happen eventually. I am the Warren Buffet of eggs.

All I have been doing is collecting, washing and storing eggs. This is about a weeks worth. I have 20 in the sink ready to be cleaned, 3 dozen in the truck to give away and I haven’t collected the eggs this morning.

Gigi and I will have two each this morning and that will still leave 650,000 eggs.
