Things I Like

A fluted pilaster with a rosette.

Just lovely. My last office I insisted that the main entrance have this. I doubt anyone noticed but I did.

But then again I appreciate doilies.

Ken whittles them in his sleep.

I do love the look of them but I would never whittle such a thing. But of course these days they are not likely to be the hard and patient work of a craftsmen. That is a sad thing.

Roy Underhill could do it with a draw knife.

Yes, the hard and patient work of craftsmen. I have often gazed at ornately carved wooden bar backs and pondered the skill and time involved. You know, those men were paid but a pittance for their work, pumping out carving after carving. Only the known artists with patrons made any money, and the carvings were usually statues for the church. Your common wood carver, no matter how good, never made much money. Kinda like a carpenter. Yes, those days are gone and almost everything is automated now. But could you image a modern day kid wanting to grow up to be a wood carver?
