Well...almost

As it turns out we didn’t make it to Jekyll Island. The RV sits loaded and ready but at the last minute Gigi confessed she was exhausted and her back was hurting.

Not to fear, plan B was instituted. The emergency home vacation action plan was set in place. This plan includes long Jeep rides, a little shopping for fun stuff, little to no work, long stretches in the screen room and naps.

I’ll show up at the quarry to dive maybe this weekend.

Gotta go….I feel a nap coming on.

Obsession

You know me....I get obsessed with an idea and I go down that path like a screaming beagle after game.

Check out this bad boy. 300 square inches of rotisserie cooking surface.

Wings, veggies, fish, dogs, brats, burgers, all cooked and smoked to perfection.

One is on order this morning.

My Own Sports Bar

It just wouldn't be complete without a beer light. It completes the sports bar effect.

Barrel cooked wings in garlic, olive oil, rosemary and Lime Pepper. A couple of jalapeno pepper roasted and rolled on the wings for a bit more flavor. Perfectly caramelized in their own juices. All smoked with hickory. No sauce needed.

And, just out my window is my own petting zoo. I am a fortunate man.

Reef Jam

Yesterday was the annual Reef Jam concert on Rainbow Beach. I was there last year. It is an afternoon of music, sun, and foolishness, with proceeds going to local projects for reef protection and awareness.

This fellow has found a clever use of chest hair.

The Book of Jedediah

And when the disciples had safely fled Sicily, they paused to give thanks.

Jedediah himself instructed his followers to obtain small cages to tumble food.

And when it was done, he declared it good.

The off season workouts continue. I am constidering commissioning construction of a much larger cage to cook wings in volume.

Midland, NC

This is my town Midland, NC. It is located about 10 miles east of Charlotte and includes a rather large unincorporated part of Cabarrus County. A few years ago Midland actually incorporated a much smaller area to become a real town.

This is the main business hub called the Crossroads, or the old timers call it Hell’s Half Acre.

Here is my RV at Crossroads Tires getting new tires. McCoy Seed and Feed is beside Crossroads. McCoy is where I get my chicken and horse feed.

There are two gas stations, a Subway, a small professional building, various small retailers and that is about it.

You gotta drive somewhere else for anything else, but I like it.

Getting my Affairs in Order

It’s that time …..A cluster vacation is looming, and I need to get my mind right.

Thursday and Friday I will wind down my business affairs for a while. Fortunately I have been very busy on the business end of my life. But my vocation doesn’t define me as a person….my vacations do.

Monday we are headed out with the entire crew on the land yacht to Jekyll Island GA. I plan to spend the week walking the dogs, riding my bike, reading, and grilling. Oh, and they’ll be a dive or two as well.

We return Sunday in time to repack and refresh and go to St Croix again. You know the drill there.

By mid June we settle down for a while until mid July when we head to Phoenix, AZ for a week.

The last week of July I do my wreck dives off of the NC coast.

There’s nothing on the books beyond that as we settle into football season. We have threatened to go to San Francisco in the fall but nothing firm.

I can’t wait to get started

Share the Knowledge

A little over a year ago, I attended The Bondo School of CulinaryArts in California. The training was intense, but I came away with the knowledge of how superior a spun chicken is.

I have practiced, and now, I am decent chicken spinner, thanks to my training at BSCA.

Recently, a student of mine down on the Atlantic coast, spun his first chicken, and sent me a picture.

I am so proud, and I know the faculty at BSCA must be proud too.

Celebration of Life

There was no funeral when he died, 5 months ago, right around Christmas. His death was so sudden, and the circumstances shocking. Today we celebrated his life with friends and food.

A very nice spread under a tent on a perfect day. Open bar too!

Mental Vacation Day

It’s going to be a great day here in the foothills of NC. The expected highs today will be the low 80’s, with light breezes, and this means perfect Jeep weather.

My Jeep had some unexpected expenses last week. The short story is that some springs in the clutch broke and were causing my shifting problem. The mechanic replaced the clutch and all related hydraulics.

The week before I had proper sized shocks installed. It made a huge difference to the handling and ride.

Combine the good weather with a fun ride and I will be living a mental vacation today in the tropics of my mind.

The List

This is "the list". I thought I lost it. It is all my worldly possessions on St Croix plus 28 pounds of dive weights.

Now for a little insight. This is my typical handwriting. I am down to just 2 clown noses...need to reorder. I keep a muddle but don't ever use it, but I might. I really love that dry bag and debate whether or not to leave it there. I am so proud that I now have two scuba tanks down there.

I will see this stuff again in 24 days.

The Box

One of my hens is in the box, the big house, in solitary confinement......until she gets her head right. She was caught pecking eggs with her pecker.

Some time alone, to collect thoughts, usually works to rehab a pecker.
