wReggie wRedesigns the Calendar

Our garbage pick up day used to be on Wednesday. This meant that on Tuesday night I would roll the garbage can down the driveway and out to the street for an early morning pickup.

This was all well and fine. Garbage pick up day marked the middle of the week.

A few months back our garbage pickup day was moved to Monday. This required me to take some of my fun time on Sunday and deal with things of Monday. I resent that I have to take some of my time off to deal with what should be work week business.

Then I got to thinking just how screwed up the calendar is anyway and it got me thinking about a redesign.

Let’s have 8 days a week and add a day between Saturday and Sunday and call it Funday.  So now you work 40 hours a week, 5 days a week, and have a three day weekend. All months are now 32 days.

The miserable month of February get reduced to 6 days. During February we have our elections and file our taxes.  The 6 day month is devoted to government activity only. All the crappy meaningless government holidays are during those 6 days.  Toss in Presidents day, ML King day, and Valentines day for starters. I’m sure we can come up with three more.

Finally the extra week we have leftover gets added to October. October is a really nice month for outdoor stuff. More golf, football and visits to the beach because we have one extra Funday in October.

Who’s in?

Two Things

Can you believe what the Lord hath made? My fingertips that are unique, and are damn good grabbers, with the ridges and moisture….I can pick up a dime or a 50 pound bag of grain.

Second….can you believe how good of a close up picture the iPhone 4 makes of my finger tips?

Brian Update

Halfway through the home season, Brian makes his first tour of duty to the big leagues.

Old Blue will not dress out this game.

The Panthers host the Vikings tomorrow. This should be our 3rd win.

Friday

The mother in law came in for a two day visit. We asked her specifically not to give the dogs any leftovers because it upsets their stomachs. But more on this later.

After a warm family exchange of pleasantries, Gigi and I headed for a day of Doctors appointments and errands, and her mother Charlotte, headed back to the coast.

I have learned that fresh eggs can go a long way in bonding a relationship, so I bring a dozen for the doctor, and a dozen for the key staff.

Organic eggs are all the rage, and the doctors and staffer really appreciate the thought.

When ever I walk in a doctor’s office with a big bag of eggs, I am dying for someone to ask what is in the bag. My pat answer will be, “A stool sample”. No takers yet.

Gigi and I visited two doctors’ offices for appointment, had lunch, and dropped by my office for a moment. The activity managed to fill most of a day. And it was super being able to park at the prime handicap spots.

We even stopped by the book store for her to browse. I personally loathe book stores.

By late afternoon Gigi was worn out. We entered the back door to a wave of knee buckling funk that rolled out the door like an escaping cat. Sure as shit, two dogs had the shits.

This event broke the just established record of 5 weeks with no accidents. I have been taking care of the dogs exclusively, and have kept them in good bowel order. Where was the breech of protocol?

Gigi then told me that the MIL gave them her leftovers last night after specifically being asked no to give the dogs leftovers.

See why I like her so much?

Sunday

Remember that giant batch of hot dog chili I made the night after Gigi’s surgery?  It has been frozen in quart containers since then. Sunday it will make its way to tailgating so that we can judge whether or not the Amos N Andy recipe is authentic.

News From The Home Front

I have been enjoying Sangiovese wine of late. Sangiovese is a red Italian wine grape variety used in Chianti. It is lighter than my usual reds, but is good, and I like the change.

Brian the grill is fully functional and joined the Weber fleet on Monday. The legs are sturdy and I installed a thermometer.

Back in the early 1960’s I would still see a few old school Pepsi bottles in circulation. I saved these two for the past 50 years and finally came up with a use for them. They are now tailgate salt and pepper shakers. I just added plastic shaker caps that I got off eBay.

And finally, behold my new dutch oven with a clever skillet top. It is two pots in one. This will be great on the grill tailgating and camping.

The Devil Came Down to Midland

Matthew 4:9 - And said to him, All these things will I give you, if you will fall down and worship me.

The devil himself came knocking at my door this morning.  He appeared as a head hunter for Wells Fargo Securities on my iPhone.

Long story short, I had huge money flashed in front of me if I would join corporate America again and be their bitch for 7 to 9 years.

No more free time, have to wear a suit, ditch the pick up truck, no more free time, no more multiple vacations, no time for chickens, horses, little boats, wife, Jeep, RVing, diving, golf, cooking, tailgating, road trips, all my clients would be theirs, and my time would be taken in exchange for riches.

No thanks. I wouldn’t even consider the negotiation session to discuss the details.  The guy asked if I heard what he was saying and he asked me to take down his name and number if I reconsidered.

No. I am a free man and wish to stay that way.

Damn it was a lot of money.

Slain

I haven’t seen someone slain in the newspapers since November 1963 when the Durham Morning Herald had the headline, “President Is Slain”.  I remember that headline to this day.

Slain is a simple word that carries a lot of violence.

In 110 Days

I love downtown Christiansted on the island of St. Croix. There is so much to do and see that I can literally spend a day there every trip down. Strangely, I avoid shopping and malls here at home, but I am drawn to this quirky little town made up of shops and bars and eateries.

Usually I reserve the last day to hang out in town before catching the flight home.

Friends

A bushel of oyster came up from the NC coast yesterday…the same friend that lugged me around the bourbon tasting via Facetime brought them up.

It is so nice to have thoughtful friends.

Today....Panthers vs Redskins in our house. Time for a win.

How To Crash a Party on an iPad

Every Friday there is a bourbon tasting at a friends house down in Lockwood Folly, North Carolina. Like clock work, friends show up at his house around 3:50 PM on Friday, go through the unlocked doors, and begin setting up the party.

Folks bring snacks, bowls of nuts, chips, dip, and one person brings the chosen bourbon of the week to taste.

Then promptly at 4:10 PM a toast is made, and all sample the unmarked bourbon.

The following hour or so is socializing and sipping the house bourbon which is Marker’s Mark. Oh, and we all toss in some money to cover for the Maker’s Mark.

Then after a while everyone cleans up and we go our separate ways.

Yesterday I took the chance that some other friends of mine just might be there and have their iPad with them.  I videoed called them on Facetime just to see if I could crash the party via video.

Sure enough, suddenly I was there in the party. He took his iPad around with me on the screen for me to mingle with the crowd. People were laughing and yelling, “Hey Hunnicutt”, in their loud bourbon outdoors voice.

I gotta tell you, I'll be attending more of these weekly functions via the iPad.

Google Maps

Nothing is much more thrilling to a nerd like me than to get behind the Google Street View camera and get my picture taken.

Here you see the car ahead with a big red ball about 6 feet over the car on a stalk with guy wires.

In a few months I’ll look me up on Google maps to see me in the red truck.

It you recall a few years ago I was seen in my Jeep on Google maps.

Special Treatment

Back in June, when I was in St Croix, I noticed my regulator was taking in water with every breath. I came to find out that the exhaust diaphragm was failing, allowing water to flow back on an inhale.

My local dive shop ordered the parts for me and 4 months later they finally came in.

I bugged them so much about the parts that they promised they would special test the regulator to make sure it would hold up for me.

They called me yesterday and said the regulator was ready and then sent this special video.

The Brain

We tend to buy things like flour, sugar, coffee, ground black pepper, and salt in bulk at Costco or Sams Club.

The other evening I was filling industrious and decided it was time to fill the salt and pepper shakers. We have various sets of shakers in the prep area in the kitchen, and a few other shakers for table use.

Finding the keg of salt was easy. For the life of me I couldn’t locate the black pepper.

I asked Gigi and she said it was in the second pantry on the bottom shelf. Then we both paused and realized just how amazing the human brain is.

Gigi had not seen the pepper in months yet her brain retained this information through trauma, surgery, flat lining, recovery, and a million other things and yet she was able to accurately recall where the pepper was stored.

Sure enough it was there where she said.

The Great Recession

You know…..life is tough sometimes, even if you are mentally on vacation.

Lots of my friends are having tough times dealing with elderly parents, bad health, lack of work, and general insecurity.

No one I know has an old fashioned 9 to 5 job anymore unless they work for some government agency. And most of them “retired” after 20 years on a pension. Can you imagine that? 20 years of work and a lifetime of income?

The risk today has shifted back to the worker….just like it was before unions and big cities. You better have a real skill that people will buy. Companies don’t want to assume risk... so you have too, to make a living.

Now some people thrive in this environment like me, and others fail. The ones that fail make me sad. I know some of them closely and I try to help. But they fail in this economic food chain, and there is not much I can do to intervene. I have to survive.

Still it causes me worry.

The Weekend

Friday night I made a pizza, and used the usual spices and garlic, and was sipping red wine, when Gigi got a full nose of smells.

The richness of wine, garlic, oregano, tomatoes, and yeast almost made her break out in tears after eating bland, salt less food in the hospital for 2 1/2 weeks. I can’t quit cooking for her now.

However my girl has had a tough 16 hours. She was prescribed a drug that enhanced another pain drug to be taken when she had breakthrough pain. Last night she did have severe pain, took the drug and she had a horrible reaction. She shook and trembled, couldn't urinate, and was dreadfully weak and drowsy. She felt like her skin was crawling.

I called the doctor this morning and wasn't sure what had happened, but said to keep a close eye on her.

Well about 1 this afternoon she took the drug again and this time we knew what it was that caused the misery. Hopefully tomorrow we'll get over this setback. It has left her bedridden and moaning in agony.

The drug is wearing off now and she is sleeping.

I love that woman.

I'll stay home with her tomorrow.

Survivor Chicken Island

Two days ago the chicken tribe, Young Hens, merged with the tribe, Old Hens, to form a new united tribe called, Mother Cluckers.

New Buffs were distributed and they all settled in the older and more established camp of the former Old Hens.

They immediately segregated themselves into their old tribes and moved about like the others just didn’t exist.

After one day the stress of the merge caused the younger hens of the Mother Cluckers to stop laying.

Updates to follow.

New Items

Because she is doing so well, the discharge date for Gigi has been moved to this coming Friday from next Tuesday. This news forced me to get my ass moving to make the home handicap friendly.

I spend my Wednesday getting the house ready by opening wide paths for a walker and doing some general cleaning. Opening wide paths involved moving some furniture and sending some stuff off to storage site I rented last week.

The hospital ordered walkers, wheel chair, shower accessories, various gadgets and suggested we get a taller toilet with a bidet.

I have never used a bidet. Acting upon doctors orders I went out and bought a new fancy toilet with a bidet at Lowes.

Without getting too detailed and personal, the experience was like using a power washer on the nether lands. It is cold but cleansing. A strange sensation indeed.

Don't Get Me Started

I don’t do navigational directions. I hate them. I get pissed off if you start explaining directions. Give me a GPS address and I’ll rely on machinery to get me there and I’ll know precisely when I will arrive. I couldn’t care less if my way isn’t the best way. Sorry.

I am a fast walker….always have been. My father and sisters were/are fast walkers. The majority of the world is medium to slow walkers. Many of slow walkers are enormously fat. This then plugs up the pathways so I have to walk slowly. I have racked up miles of walking behind slow fat walkers in hospital hallways the past few weeks.

Gigi Update

Gigi has been amazing. She has hit her stride in rehab.

Plans now are for her to be discharged next Tuesday morning.

Rehab consists of physical therapy, and occupational therapy, which mean regular shit like dressing, showers and personal hygiene.  Along this line we have a two hour session Thursday afternoon practicing getting Gigi in and out of my big truck for a Friday doctor appointment.

Her attitude is fantastic. I can see fire in her eyes.

There is a long road ahead and she still has a lot of pain and wound discharge….but I can see fire in her eyes. This is good.

My Inner Nerd

The nerd in me is about to burst out waiting for the release of the iPhone/iPad operating system update. It is supposed to be available after midnight on the 12th.

I haven’t been so worked up since the 10 PM release of DOS 3.0 in 1994 when I ran across the parking lot at Egghead computer to grab my copy with all the other PC nerds.

Behold...In All It's Glory

Three young hens stuffed with lemons and rosemary turned over charcoal and cherry wood. Moist, tender, and delicious.

On the other grill was marinated chicken breast on charcoal and cherry.

We added a nice generous portion of brats and about 20 people and before you know it….it was all gone.

Week One Weigh In

I used every single point and lost 5 pounds on my first week of Weight Watchers. The first week is always the easiest as far as shedding pounds. I fully expect about 1 to 2 pound per week as I move on forward.

Not once was I hungry, but I ate very differently than I usually do.

Hopefully by Jan 15 and my annual physical I can produce some decent numbers on blood pressure and other stats.
Her back is straight now.

Tonight Gigi looked as good as I have seen her in weeks. She was glowing. I am so proud of her. She is working through the physical therapy like a pro.

Hopefully she will be home by next Saturday. I love that woman.

Playing With My Wood

I have managed to collect quite a variety of wood for smoking on my grills.

The standard “go to” smoking wood, in plenty of supply around these parts, is hickory. It has a very rich flavor but can be overdone.

Last night I used mesquite wood on the pizza oven. It burns very hot and has a nice flavor.

Before cooking, no known images after cooking cause it was so damn good.

Sunday at the tailgate, I plan to use cherry wood for the chicken. It is supposed to have a nice mild flavor and is said to darken the chicken to a nice brown color.

A friend brought me some pecan wood the other day. I am letting it dry a spell before I use it.

Finally, last week, I acquired some apple wood that I will use on pork.

Weigh In Time

My body tends to run on 5 year cycles where I reach an ideal weight, then gradually creep up over years to a place where the clothes are tight, and my blood pressure is high.

I am at the wrong end of the 5 year cycle so I decided to do something about it.

I am good at weight reduction once I commit.  Last Sunday during NFL football, I couldn’t help but notice all the ads for Weight Watchers for men. I’ve read a lot of good things about the regime so I decided to give it a try.

Basically I am allotted 33 point a day to use as I please. It becomes a game to me when I find hacks that maximize my points. Exercise can add points. Fruit and vegetables are free with no points. Some things I love like, orange juice or coffee creamer are so costly that I avoid them now.

Still some of my favorite foods are low points like chicken, lean beef and lean pork.

It is a slippery slope on booze. My go to drink is red wine however it commands a stiff penalty. White wine is doable and only 3 points. An ounce and a half of bourbon is 3 points. A light beer is 4 points.

Honestly after 5 days and going on six I can feel the weight dropping off. Mid week I did a weigh in just to see and I had lost 3 pounds.

3 pounds doesn’t seem like a lot but go to the grocery store and head to the butcher section and gander at 3 pounds of pork fat. That is quite a hunk of fat. That motivates me.

Guess What?

If your spouse has a cardiac arrest you get two of these meal cards good for $14 of eats at the hospital cafeteria.

I know they meant well.

I love Technology

Craigs list can be great. Today’s find is an AT&T Microcell that will boost my 3G phone service to 5 bars here at the home. It hooks to the Internet and miracles go on somewhere else and I get mo power out here in the sticks.

New they are $200 from AT&T, and I am getting a new one from a very nervous woman who is sure I am a pervert for $80.

I will meet her at an exit at a yet to be disclosed public place.

Hopefully now I can convince Gigi to drop the dedicated hotline to her mother, or as the rest of you call it, the land line.

A talking assistant call Siri comes with the new iPhone that was announced yesterday. I’ll have to get. Check out the demo videos.

Welcome to the Family

Please welcome Brian to the family. Brian is a Weber One Touch Gold that was found on Craig’s list. Here we see Brian sporting the Weber Rotisserie.

Last night Brian got a through cleaning with Easy Off and then a hot burn off. He is a handsome fellow isn’t he?

He will have to under go surgery to tighten his legs as is common on the One Touch Models. After a few bolts are installed I expect Brian to join my Weber fleet and become an active member.

Brian makes the third and final grill in the charcoal collection. It is not uncommon for me to have two grills going at once and Brian now allows for an option of having a grill at Southport, or as a rotisserie while the others are being used.

Here’s How the Week Went Down

Monday – 8 hour surgery followed by a long difficult recovery. She had a cardiac arrest and was worked on for some time before she was resuscitated. I am told to go home but her condition is grave.

Tuesday – Move to ICU in the early morning from recovery in the Orthopedic Hospital to the main hospital. Her ventilator was removed about 1 PM and she breathed on her own. Big victory. I am so glad to see her and she is alive.

Gigi and I two weeks ago.
Wednesday – In ICU and the body is telling us it didn’t like a cardiac arrest. Organ enzymes are very bad for her kidneys, heart and liver.  These need to improve soon.

Thursday – She is stable enough to be moved to Critical Care unit from ICU. Her enzymes are starting to show better news.

Friday – She takes two small walks on a walker. In the afternoon her mind starts acting strange. That night I am called in to be with her. She is having Post Operative Delirium.  I spend the entire night with her and she never slept.

Saturday – Not at all improved and she is assigned a sitter to monitor her while I am gone.

Sunday – Improved with her mindset, talks to me and makes a few jokes. I am grateful.  Her body is healing well and her enzymes are returning to normal. The doctors think the main culprit with her mind is the low sodium. This has to be increased slowly. I am encouraged.

I have one tough woman, don’t I? We are thankful for all your prayers and need them coming for her recovery.
