I am currently reading a book about Julius Caesar. The Roman tax system was amazing. Private companies would bid for the right to collect taxes in different provinces, promising to deliver x amount of taxes to Rome. Any extra they collected was theirs to keep. Many senators owned or had shares in such companies.
Given the way the current British government is running down central services, I am wondering how long it will be before they decide to use this system!
