we ususally try to get them to do each order separate so we end up with only one check
Most places will divide the orders up separately on one bill now, so then we just each pay what we owe.
Just ask the server to make out five separate checks. Make them earn that tip. ;-)
Elect one member of the group as the "banker". Each couple then deposits $100 (or some arbitrary amount) with the banker. Order what you want, drink what you want, and the banker pays the bill. When funds are running low, everyone makes another equal deposit.
If these people are good enough friends to share your island paradise with, then you likely won't get any crap from someone about how their portion would have been $5 less. If they complain, then they stay home next time.
Separate checks and bothering with splitting bills while you are on vacation takes too much time and hassle.
We usually just divide up the cost evenly between all the couples, unless of course, someone orders something way more expensive than everyone else.
